New Firmware for SMC WSKP100 WiFi Phone

Nothing gets me going like a good firmware update. (Well, when it comes to gadgets anyway…) It’s great when you know developers are still working to improve devices you’ve bought by fixing bugs and adding new features.
With that in mind I’m happy to note that SMC has just posted a new firmware, version 1.0.0.19P1, for its WSKP100 WiFi phone. We reviewed the WSKP100 a while back—it’s especially cool because it works with FON hotspots. Read on to find out what’s fixed and where to get it.
In addition to general connectivity and sound quality improvements, the update has several specific bugfixes, including:
- better representative event icons (i.e. they properly go away after checking missed calls or voicemail and are correct for different usernames)
- better voicemail integration (issues with access to voicemail right after turning on the unit and forwarding calls to voicemail fixed)
- better searching and scanning (searches for contacts that return no results and scans for wireless networks that don’t find anything have more options)
US users can download the new firmware here and UK users can get it here. Everyone else? Go to SMC’s website, choose your country and enter the site, click on Support in the upper right corner, then Downloads on the left, then in Step 1 choose Voice as your product category, the WSKP100 as your model number, and then select the only part number listed. Then click the arrow at the bottom of the page and you’ll see the new firmware.
For most firmware updates I’d say the country version doesn’t matter—but for this you will want the right country so your language works properly.
Once you’ve downloaded the update, extract the files to a directory, run the .exe file and follow the instructions. You’ll need the miniUSB-to-USB cable that came with the phone (or a different one) to load the firmware.

I just received my new phone from Amazon a few days ago and it has been fine. Easy to use right out of the box and I just finished the firmware update to version 1.0.0.19P1. I'm a computer nerd so I found it to be easy, but I didn't think it was that complicated so others should be able to get it. One thing, I have a Mac (OSX) and the firmware update came for use with a PC. I had to do the update on a PC. No problem really, but if you only have a Mac in the house that won't run XP, you might have to do the update on a friends computer.

Although I still have trouble directly calling contacts from voicemail, almost all other issues with this phone have been fixed (accepting limitations of the technology)
Bravo to SMC for this decent piece of first generation tech.
I kinda wish I'da gotten second, but I'm still aight with gen1.

The Skype SMC WSKP100 WIFI Phone i received about a week ago is fulfilling expectations so i don't regret buying it.
Thanks to your blog i've updated the firmware to version 1.0.0.19P1 which apparently had already been issued on 2007/04/03 which makes you wonder why they didn't update the phone themselves.

How well does this handset negotiation authentication web pages of a coffee shop in order to access a local hot spot to make a call?

The SMC WSKP100 can connect to regular password protected and unprotected home and office networks, as well as FON hotspots. It can't do Non-FON hotspots that have a web authentication page. Functionality with FON was recently improved with the latest firmware update, which I wrote about here.

Having used this phone quite happily (but for the battery) since April 2007, my SMC WSKP100 is now dead. Recently, the shut-down and reboot events increased in frequency until it never powered up anymore.
I am trying to find warranty information. The phone was purchased through the skype accessories portal and was sold as a bundle with the FON WiFi router.
Can anyone help?
Cheers, Massimo
