Skype available on Nokia N95 X-Series in Austria...

We've already seen 3 roll out their X-Series mobile phone concept to a whole load of countries as Andrew wrote last week, so it's great to see that Austrians can also now benefit from this unique proposition. And, to top it off, 3 Austria's X Series phone line-up includes the mind-blowingly superb Nokia N95 handset, complete with its 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, wifi and high speed mobile data connectivity.
For the uninitiated, 3's popular X-Series is a slightly different concept to your run-of-the-mill contract mobile phone. The reason? Every X-Series phone comes bundled with a load of innovative applications, including Skype, which really extend your mobile phone out from being a mere telephone to being a fully-featured multimedia device capable of fulfilling your every need.
The included Skype client lets you call all of your usual buddies, as well as seeing their status. In addition to Skype, the phones also come with other cool software such as Orb (which lets you access files stored on your PC at home when you're out), Slingplayer (which lets you watch all your home TV channels from your mobile if you have a Slingbox installed at home and is only available on the Gold tariff), Yahoo!'s all-round 'Go' application and access to Windows Live Messenger, eBay and Google.
In addition to the N95, 3 Austria are offering a choice of two other high-spec Nokia phones: the N73 and the Nokia E65. Monthly prices start at E9.50 for the first 9 months (E19 thereafter).

I don't get it. Nokia N95 works on Symbian S60 3d edition, isn't it? So when do we see a downloadable Skype-client for Symbian? I own a Nokia E61 and I'm dying for Skype on my phone to use in my home WiFi-network. What's the roadmap for Skype for Symbian?

I'm using Fring on my Nokia n95 through my wifi connection while in the states and calling my parents in the UK using both skype to skype and skype out. Both worked well even though th connection was better than others at times. I found that it worked best when my parents were using a usb phone or similar rather than their laptop speakers and mic. Or ring skype out to their phone made a very good connection and very cheap. Would love to see a dedicated skype download for symbian 60 v3 though. COme on Skype.... you know you want to, with so many phones wifi enabled.

Come on skype....
We're all waiting for skype on our wifi phones. We would love a dedicated skype program on our N95's and similar. If you can make it for the phones in Austria then you can release it for the rest of us.
Fring is good but I'll bet you can do a better job and keep us up to date on our account balance as well.
Go on........ PLEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS

Hi Guys,
To share my experience with N95 and skype on it.
Let me first start with the fact that I have a 3 skypephone which is brilliant and skype is just working as a normal desktop skype, except the skype-in and skype-out functions!!! From my research I found that the 3 skypephone is actually Amilo mobile phone with preloaded skype software from iSkoot. I won't go into details as the main point here is N95.
I ordered one N95 8GB from 3 five days ago and as soon as I received it the first thing to try was the Skype option. From very first look I was really disapointed as I was expecting something at least to the level of 3 skypephone. Nothing like that. The skype on N95 is some third party redirection software which is listing your Skype contacts and when trying to call them is using a call-back service to establish the connection. The call-back is so obvious that I would describe it as a pioneering prototype of something, but definatelly not a complete product. On other hand THERE IS NO SKYPE CHAT function!!! Basically there is no way you can send and receive a chat messages from your skype contacts.
I had a 5 hour conversation with 3 technical support and customer services trying to identify whether this is just a problem with me, or it is a general lack of the skype service 3 are offering with the N95. It turned up finally that just N95 doesn't have the Skype chat option and the skype calls are based on some kind of call-back service, which from my point of view is DIY ( let's just make it work somehow ) on behalf of 3. Finally, which is not directly related to the beauty of N95 is that 3 were refusing to cancel my contract under the 14 days peace of mind warranty, because I have used my headset!!!!! This made me furious as noone could explain me how am I supposed to try their service without switching on the handset N95. So be very cautious about 3 terms and conditions!!! Besides on their website N95 is described as Skype compatible! There are no remarks ( at least until yesterday ) that the skype service has any limitations or lacks.
As a further trial I purchased N95 8GB from a different network ( I don't wana make advertisements, but if anyone wants to know I will give their name ) which came without skype, but with full internet access. On that N95 I tried loading FRING and IM+. The verdict is that FRING works just fine, supposedly you have a full ( not limited by TCP/IP ports ) internet from your Mobile network or from your WAN access point. It supports the skype calls and chat functions without any delays. I noticed that the level of the sound is perfect for the other side, but a little bit low for me to hear them even when increase the volume to max. But in general the overall experience is just 9.5 out of 10!
The second software IM+ for skype which I tired is using a call-back technology and this is just the first downside. I never managed to make it fully work on my N95, although I followed fully the instructions. It might be my mistake- I will confess that I didn't put too much efforts, because I found it useless for me using a call-back technology. I couldn't retrieve my skype contacts list, so I would appreciate if anyone have tried it and could describe how does it work ( as for dummies ) in step by step instruction. The second downside is that the software is not free, but I suppose that if it is a properly working one ( including normal skype call and chat features ) the price of $19.95 would be quite acceptable for everyone. As I couldn't retrieve my skype list I didn't have a chance to try the skype chat feature of IM+ for skype, so I cannot really make any comments on this and would be gratefull if anyone has something extra to add as personal experience and tests!!
