Living Abroad with USRobotics

By My status Andrew Brennan on July 19, 2007 in Promotions, US Robotics.

UK readers: this Saturday The Times is publishing a special ‘Life Abroad’ supplement, with tips on how to purchase property internationally and how to save money while living abroad. Clearly Skype is a good way to do this, so USRobotics is including a page that offers information and instruction to readers on how to use Skype for international calling—it’s very ‘how-to’ and if you’re here you probably don’t need to see it, but I’m guessing it will help a lot of Times readers.

I’m mentioning it because with the ‘Life Abroad’ supplement USRobotics is offering a promotion for up to 2 hours of free SkypeOut calls if you purchase USRobotics hardware.

VoSKY Ultimate BizPak: New Bundle for Business

By My status Andrew Brennan on July 17, 2007 in VoSky.

VoSKY makes Skype-certified ‘Exchanges’ that integrate Skype into the phone systems (PBXs) that businesses already have. This gives Exchange users new flexibility for making, receiving and routing calls within their businesses and to the outside world. We’ve talked about VoSKY’s Exchanges on Skype Gear before in this interview and this overview. I think two of the coolest features are the ability to add a single click-to-call Skype contact on a business website so incoming Skype calls gets routed to the best/most available person and the ability to link and transfer calls between international branch offices for free using the phones you already have.

Recently VoSKY put together a new bundle that will save businesses even more than what they’ll save from solely implementing Skype. It’s called the VoSKY Ultimate BizPak, and it’s now available in the UK.

Skypegear Roadtest: Skype on the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet

By My status Andrew Brennan on July 11, 2007 in Mobile, Nokia.

N800_45.jpg

It’s been promised for quite a while and now it’s finally here—Skype is running on the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. I’ve been testing out a unit with Skype for about a week now and in a nutshell I think it’s a great addition that really increases the functionality of the device. Read on for my full review.

Tip: Auto-Recharge SkypeOut credit for your devices

By My status Andrew Brennan on July 6, 2007 in Skype hardware tips.

auto-recharge.png

Now, I love Skype gear as much as (well, let’s be honest, probably more) than the next guy, but I do have a pet peeve: on most Skype hardware you can’t actually purchase SkypeOut credit within the device. The screen will tell you how much credit you have left, but when it comes to purchasing credit you have to go to the Skype website. This is not a problem when you’re near a computer, but when you’re using a Skype device that doesn’t need a computer (such as a desktop or cordless phone that plugs into your router, a WiFi phone, or your mobile calling your Skype to Go number on Skype Pro), this can be an issue. Fortunately, there is a way around it.

Skypegear Roadtest: Topcom Webt@lker 5000

By My status Andrew Brennan on July 3, 2007 in Desktop internet phones, Topcom.

IMG_5283.JPG

While these days I usually find myself talking on a cordless or mobile phone (whether I’m Skyping or not), sometimes it’s really nice—even reassuring—to use a corded phone. You always know where it is and the sound quality is likely to be very good because it’s never “out of range.” That’s why I like the Topcom Webt@lker 5000—it’s a corded desktop phone that works with Skype and doesn’t need a computer—you just plug it into your router and then instantly you’ve got a dedicated, reliable Skype line. I had the chance to try one out for a few days and found it to be well thought-out and easy to use. Read on for my full review.
