CES Spotlight: IPEVO Solo Desktop Skype Phone--Now Wireless

By My status Andrew Brennan on January 17, 2008 in Desktop internet phones, Ipevo.

We talked about the IPEVO Solo, another great desktop internet phone for Skype, last June when it came out. At CES this year, IPEVO announced a new wireless adapter for the Solo, so if your router or ethernet port isn’t near your desk, you can now use your wireless network to make Skype calls on the phone. The company was also running a neat promotion—visitors who stopped by the IPEVO booth could use a Solo to call anyone in the world they wanted—Skype users as well as people with landlines and mobile phones (via SkypeOut). Very cool. You can learn more about the Solo on IPEVO’s website here—the new wireless adapter for the phone will be available soon.

UPDATE: Nafcom from Nafcom’s Crap Blog! has helpfully figured out that this IPEVO wireless adapter is actually already available in Taiwan and the USA, and won’t be available elsewhere. It’s also worth noting that while the phone is Skype Certified, the wireless adapter isn’t.

Whatever has happened to the IPEVO website? For the past two days I have tried to go to the various skype.com URL's only to receive a message that the web address cannot be found by my browser. I have also tried to contact IPEVO at their USA phone number, but all I get is an automated computer answering machine incessantly playing "Feliz Navidad" (in late January nonetheless!) followed by an announcement that they are restructuring their phone system. The catch concerning the latter is that that same message has been playing for the past two weeks! I did place an order for a new Skype Solo Desk Phone online about two weeks ago when the website was still active. I am very happy with the product, but tried to get some direct info concerning the new dongle for wireless capability for use with the Solo Phone, but was totally frustrated in the process. Does anyone know what has happened to IPEVO????? Thanks, Richard Herried
