New Cordless Skype Phone: The Philips VoIP855
By
Andrew Brennan on September 9, 2009 in Cordless phones, Philips.
Earlier this month Philips announced its latest Skype phone, the VoIP855. This DECT cordless phone combines Skype and regular landline calling without the need for a PC, and is a follow-up to the very popular Philips VoIP 841 Cordless Phone for Skype. It automatically syncs with your Skype contacts, has XHD sound, and is Skype Certified, meaning it's been through the wringer testing-wise and should provide a great user experience.
The Philips VoIP855 will be available for purchase in the next few weeks. For more information you can check out Philips's press release [PDF link] and spec sheet [PDF link], and I'm going to be posting a full review of the device here on the Gear Blog soon.

I'm not terribly happy with the first Skype phone that Philips made. I believe it's dying for a software update, but no one seems in a terrrible rush to do one. I've written to Skype and Philips, and they both pass the buck on this one. The trouble with the last one is, when the person being called picks up, it takes about ten seconds for them to be able to hear me (When making Skype2Skype calls), and they usually give up and hang up before that happens. Also, quite often when I want to check my phone book or call log, it is un available, and I will have to try many times to get it so I can make a phone call or just give up and use my WiFi Skype phone. I hope this one is an improvement.

Hi, I just want to know when, where, and what price I can buy this Philips Voip855 (can not wait anymore). I have very good experience with philips and other skype cordless phone. I hope philips fix some bugs in philips voip841 like power supply will compitable for 110v to 240v. I hope this will fix in new one so whole world can use. Till today I haven't found better then SKYPE in voip industries. Cause what ever service SKYPE offer to community no one can offer till today and not in future. So good on you SKYPE and PHILIPS keep it up. Thanks

I'm not interested.
What I need, what all my staff needs, are wireless headset Skypephones.
I've never seen one, although I regularly use cordless hand-held phones and wireless headphones, though these have obvious significant drawbacks. Surely this is just one small step further..?

faroeseviking,
I encounter the same problem with mine LinkSys CIT400 calling (or when called from) a Netgear. With SkypeOut or DectTOpc no problems at all. It seems like last version of Skype for DectPhone is bugged. But, it seems people @ Skype isn't interested on it. Strange, indeed!

An amazing sound quality and a seamless experience are the conclusions of my testing report.
I have received one sample for test and it is clear that this device is outstanding previous experiences.
Installation has been limited to connect 4 plugs and enter my Skype credentials. Once done, PC hurdles became memories.
Usage is very simple and getting or making a call re-become as simple as with a traditional phone but with the Skype prices.
Sound is really outstanding and especially the hands free function which makes that device a perfect conference call machine.
The only drawback is coming from the fact that automatic turn on/off function has not been implemented and as a result my Skype status is showing available 24/7. Due to the fact that I have 7h time difference with my home country, I therefore receive some call during the night if I don't turn it off before going to sleep.
but all in all, a damn good product !

This is a good page on the VoIP855:
http://www.consumer.philips.com/c/internet-telefone/voip8551b_26/prd/de/
It's in German, but contains links to the quickstart guide, manual, datasheet, etc.
ematignon: I'm interested in buying a Voip855, but so far it only seems to be available from German (and Dutch?) sites -- not in the UK or Ireland. Can you tell me whether your test unit contained English language options (e.g. for menus)? The documentation above certainly implies it should work in the UK, and I suspect Ireland.

Does anyone know when this product will be available in the US? Approximate selling price? Since there is no information out here on this - I am thinking about buying the RTX Dualphone 3088 (looks like a great device) ...Christmas is getting close.
I like what I see & hear so far from Phillips...but this seems like it may be a lot of hot air.???
