Hello, Skype for your mobile!

By My status Andrew Brennan on April 24, 2008 in Mobile, Skype Mobile.

sfym

Whoa whoa whoa! Hot on the heels of Skype’s new global calling plans comes (in my geeky opinion) some even more exciting news—the release of Skype for your mobile beta!

So what is it and what can you do with it?

Skype for your mobile (beta) is a ‘thin’ client for Skype that works on Java-enabled mobile phones. It lets you use many of Skype’s features on the phone you already have. On the main information page (here), you can get instructions for how to install it on your phone and you can see a list of phones that Skype for your mobile has been tested on (though it may work even if your phone isn’t listed, the phone needs to be Java-enabled).

Using Skype for your mobile beta, you can

  • Make Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls
  • Receive calls from Skype contacts and from people calling your online number (SkypeIn)
  • Send and receive instant messages (including group chats)
  • See whether your contacts are online
  • Set your online presence
  • Adjust your account settings

There are a couple things to be aware of though:

3mobilebuzz Most Expensive Call Competition: Win £500

By My status Andrew Brennan on January 25, 2008 in 3 Skypephone, Skype Mobile.

3spcall.png

Our friends over at 3mobilebuzz continue to scour the web for great news and reviews of the 3 Skypephone. (I’m still loving mine, by the way—porting my mobile number over to 3 was quite painless and now I’m using my 3 Skypephone exclusively, which is great). Anyways, until the end of this month 3mobilebuzz are running another competition in the UK, this time through Facebook. They’re looking for people who have racked up big phone bills from making international calls from their mobiles. The person who made the most expensive call last year is the winner, and gets £500 to pay off the bill. He or she also gets a pair of 3 Skypephones, so calls like that will never have to happen again. (Three runners-up also get a pair of phones.)

All the relevant details (including terms and conditions) are on the Facebook page. Head on over, become a fan and share your story on the wall. There are some great ones on there already…

More on the 3 Skypephone

By My status Andrew Brennan on November 9, 2007 in 3 Skypephone, Skype Mobile.

image

News on the 3 Skypephone continues to tear up the blogosphere—and the team at 3mobilebuzz have been doing a great job of collecting it all: reviews, forum discussions, blog posts, competitions—there’s a lot there. After a week of 3 Skypephone availability in stores, here are a few more highlights they’ve spotted:

The TFTS Hands On Review:

Of course, a great deal of this is down to Skype being so intuitive to set up and use in the first place, but where 3 have to be wholly commended is that, in bringing the service to a mobile device they have not, in any way, placed any barrier in the way of usability. This phone, then, positively oozes the very spirit of Skype – and that is to bring crystal clear VOIP technology to the masses - in a package that is as simple as dialling from a landline (if not simpler).

3 Skypephone as a video player:

Fresh Plastic has noted a program (SUPER) and some good settings for converting videos you’ve downloaded to play on the 3 Skypephone. The 3 Skypephone has a nice interface for YouTube built in, but if you want to save YouTube videos to watch whenever you want, you can use Zamzar (and convert them to 3gp for the phone in the process).

More applications for the 3 Skypephone:

Gerrymoth found (and put together in a single download) a bunch of java applications that work on the 3 Skypephone, including mWallet, GoDiary and Wikipedia. I haven’t tried them all (I’m still enamoured with java Google Mail and Maps, which work great), but it’s pretty neat that the phone is so expandable.

Speaking of Java apps, I’ve got a a highlight of my own for the 3 Skypephone. This week Opera Mini 4 came out of beta—it’s a java-based browser that renders whole web pages with a neat zoom feature; it works well on the 3 Skypephone. Opera Mini 4 also has support for RSS feeds and synching bookmarks with the desktop version of Opera. The browser built in to the 3 Skypephone is perfectly fine, but the Opera Mini zoom feature really puts the whole internet in your pocket—it goes well with the Skype that’s always in your pocket. You can get more information (or download it onto your handset using the 3 Skypephone browser) by going to operamini.com.

3mobilebuzz: All 3 Skypephone News, All the Time

By My status Andrew Brennan on November 1, 2007 in 3 Skypephone, Skype Mobile.

image

Have you seen 3mobilebuzz yet? It’s a new site from 3 “bringing you all the buzz about 3’s mobiles, price plans, products and services.” It just launched and so far it’s been focusing on the 3 Skypephone, chronicling (in impressive detail) reactions from journalists and bloggers (including yours truly) to the new phone.

It already has a ton of great content; I’ve got a few favorite posts which include:

  • This set of PowerPoint slides showing off the phone’s features
  • This podcast between John Penberthy-Smith (3’s marketing director) and influential blogger and podcaster Neville Hobson
  • This post noting blogger Dale Lane’s reaction about the good (and bad) aspects of the phone
  • This post linking to blogger Dan York’s photos (mine certainly did not turn out that well—I think I need a better camera!)

Posts on the site are going up like wildfire—it’s becoming a fantastic resource. Check it out here.

3 Skypephone Video Walkthrough

By My status Andrew Brennan on November 1, 2007 in 3 Skypephone, Skype Mobile.

I’ve made a little video on the 3 Skypephone, showing off the Skype interface, mobile TV / media player, camera, settings, and Java on the phone:

This is my first video for the blog, so (be gentle!) apologies that the audio levels are a bit wonky. Any other features you want to see or learn more about? Let me know in the comments.

3 Skypephone: UI Tour

By My status Andrew Brennan on October 30, 2007 in 3 Skypephone, Skype Mobile.

After yesterday’s announcement (and before it’s in stores on Friday) I thought you might like to see some photos of what the 3 Skypephone’s user interface looks like. It runs Qualcomm’s BREW platform.

IMG_6074 IMG_6076

When you first turn on the phone, you see the 3 logo (followed by the Skype logo and then the iSkoot logo—iSkoot is the company that helped develop the Skype software in the phone.). On the right you see the phone’s main home screen. The top soft buttons launch 3’s Launcher and Planet3 web services, and the Skype button opens up the Skype client.

Loads of Updates for the Nokia N800

By My status Andrew Brennan on October 10, 2007 in Nokia, Skype Mobile.

image

You may recall how we very excitedly noted the launch of Skype on the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet a few months back. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Nokia N800 is a Linux-based WiFi Internet Tablet with a 4.1” 800x480 touchscreen and 330 MHz processor. In addition to a Skype client, it has a great browser (Opera), email client and RSS reader, as well as a player for music and video. It has an active and open development platform and new applications are coming out for it all the time.

On that note, I’ve got a few updates and recent reviews to share…

3 X-Series brings mobile Skype to Ireland

By My status Andrew Brennan on September 17, 2007 in Skype Mobile.

irelandxseries

Villu has already mentioned it on the main blog but it’s certainly worth repeating here: 3’s X-Series is now available in Ireland.

We’ve mentioned X-Series a couple times on the blog before, but for the uninitiated: X-Series is an add-on to 3 mobile phone contracts that gives you access to several great applications—including Skype, eBay, Yahoo!, and mobile email and podcasts—on your mobile wherever you are. The Skype client lets you make unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls and see all your buddies’ statuses on your handset (though there’s no chat functionality).

In Ireland the Nokia E65 and N73 are currently supported for X-Series, and more handsets will be added soon.

3 has networks around the world, with X-Series now available in Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Australia, Hong Kong, and the UK in addition to Ireland. For you globetrotters, it’s worth noting that Hutchinson, the company behind 3, has an extraordinarily sensible roaming policy—if you’re on any of their networks, you pay only your regular tariff without any extra charges. It’s called ‘3 Like Home’ and it’s one of the reasons (in addition to Skype of course) that I’m switching to 3 later this month when my contract with my current provider expires.

You can learn more about X-Series on the official X-Series Blog here.

Skype available on Nokia N95 X-Series in Austria...

By My status Stephen Pinches on June 18, 2007 in Skype Mobile.

We’ve already seen 3 roll out their X-Series mobile phone concept to a whole load of countries as Andrew wrote last week, so it’s great to see that Austrians can also now benefit from this unique proposition. And, to top it off, 3 Austria’s X Series phone line-up includes the mind-blowingly superb Nokia N95 handset, complete with its 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, wifi and high speed mobile data connectivity.

Exclusive Nokia E65 now available from 3's X-Series UK

By My status Stephen Pinches on March 2, 2007 in Nokia, Retail, Skype Mobile.

Errr, well the Marketing guys at Three don’t muck about with the messaging on their new product advertising, as you can see from the above. Reading between the lines on the above ad, it appears that maybe, perhaps, Three are now offering the whizzy E65 as part of their lineup of ‘X-Series’ phones.

X-Series and Skype go underground in Hong Kong

By My status Stephen Pinches on February 21, 2007 in Promotions, Skype Mobile.

IMG_0084.JPG

3’s X-Series has invaded the Hong Kong metro, with enormous posters plastered all over the stations. Bearing in mind that 3 Hong Kong network provide full 3G coverage in all the stations and tunnels of the metro system, this is a great place to advertise the benefits of being able to make free and very cheap calls via Skype on your 3 X-Series mobile phone.

Three's X-Series extends Skype to mobiles in Sweden

By My status Stephen Pinches on February 5, 2007 in Skype Mobile.

As Jane already mentioned over on the UK Skype blog, Hutchinson have extended their X-Series phones into Scandinavia, launching in Sweden (see photos of the launch below).

For a base price of 149 Swedish Kronor a month (£11/E16.50), Swedes will be able to talk their way through the dark winter days, and also access services such as Skype, Yahoo!, MSN Messenger and Hotmail straight from the Nokia N73 handset currently supplied.

CES 2007: The Nokia N800 Skype-enabled some time around the middle of the year

By My status Stephen Pinches on January 15, 2007 in CES 2007, Nokia, Skype Mobile.

Nokia N800

The Nokia N800 has already begun shipping in the US, and although we may have to wait a while before Nokia’s latest internet tablet gets full Skype support, their announcement at CES that the N800 would add Skype calling to its list of features some time around the middle of the year is most definitely good news.

Mobile and Skypegear become one

By My status Stephen Pinches on December 19, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

“Be a little wiser baby, put it on, put it on,
‘Cause tonight, is the night, when two become one”.

Spice Girls, 1996

spiceintro.jpg

Yes, as you probably guessed from the quotation, we’ve decided to merge the Skypegear and Mobile blogs. Why? Well, I suppose that now Skype users have a whole host of devices to choose from when they are deciding the best way to make calls via Skype. Mobile is one of those, as are the wifi phones we’ve seen popping up, or the cordless DECT/Skype phones, for example. We want a one stop shop for the whole ‘ecosystem’ (as it’s called at Skype).

Skype for mobile 2.2: more phones supported and better integration

By My status Stephen Pinches on December 14, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

Skype for mobile has already hit the 5 million downloads mark since April 2004, so this week’s release of the public beta of version 2.2 should already have a loyal following.

So is it worth upgrading? Well, there are certainly some neat new features.

5 million downloads and a Pocket PC public chat

By My status Tony Saigh on November 21, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

Skype for Pocket PC reached an amazing milestone last month in reaching 5 million downloads and winning Smartphone and Pocket PC Magazine’s Best Software 2006 award in the phone and fax category (for the second year running).

2006-BSANominee_PCC_153x153.gif

Things seem to move so fast at Skype that I often need to remind myself to stop and think. Reaching 5 million downloads in just over two years is unprecented in the Windows Mobile developer community and more than anything shows just how important an application Skype is to Pocket PC users.

Sat nav, mobile email, and Skype all in one package?

By My status Tony Saigh on November 21, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

Yes, we want it all and it seems that we’re getting it all in even smaller packages. This year saw more and more Windows Mobile phones with GPS and this is a theme that seems set to continue next year.

So I thought I’d give a little round up of a few “GPS Pocket PC phones”, all of which work great with Skype and also give our large community of Pocket PC Skype users to add their thoughts.

Nice UK mobile tie-in: 3 and Skype offer free calls over mobile

By My status Stephen Pinches on November 17, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

OK so this might be more mobile-based than gadget based but hey, this one was too interesting to miss.

Skype Goes Mobile: unlimited communications, Anywhere, Anytime

By My status  on February 21, 2006 in Skype Mobile.

Skype is breaking new ground in making unlimited high-quality Internet communications available anywhere, anytime through global partnerships with leading mobile operators and device makers, and new versions of its software for mobile devices.

With Skype in their pockets, people will be able to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues wherever they go – at home, at work or on the move. There will be no need for a PC in order to be part of the global Skype community.

In addition to mobile Internet calling, Skype on mobile devices will enable people to chat with their contacts around the world using Skype Instant Messaging (IM), and share their availability through ‘Skype presence’. Contacts will be automatically synchronized between the mobile device and the PC.

2005 was the year Skype brought Internet communications to more than 75 million registered PC users: 2006 is set to be the year Skype goes mobile.
