New price model for SkypeOut

By My status Jane Hoskyn on December 19, 2006 in Skype announcements.

Skype is set to announce a new set of prices for SkypeOut – but you'll have to wait until 18 January for the full details. First, you'll have to survive a helpless Cadbury's Celebrations binge, torture-by-in-laws and the whatever else the Christmas assault course can throw at you.

The new pricing strategy is intended to simplify the not-quite-free side of Skyping, and will probably look a bit like the subscription model introduced last month for SkypeOut users in the US and Canada. Watch this space in just under a month's time for full info.

Why are they announcing it as a "...disruptive pricing structure ...?" What's disruptive about it? What's so good about the call connection charge they're introducing? Have they been taking lessons from the UK railways - too many options to work out whether you've been overcharged?

i call from spain to my friends who dont have computers. ipay skypeoutrates . If said rates go up on my end i could try another OUT service like gizmo or buy computers for my friends. Why dont the big voip guys jus giveoutthe free cell fons with internet connections instead of cell fon connections.we could all just turn on the cells and be online to voip each other. if google gives away cells the gtalk free where would be be? skype has to think about hardware thatallows net2net calling via skype andnot just offer great skypeout ...give good headphones

I use SkypeOut almost exclusively for my calls in the UK and International. Am quite worried by this announcement and will hold off buying Skype credits until the position is clarified. Why do Skype have to make such a premature statement of intent?

We have used skype to keep in touch with our family and friends spread throughout the world from the very start of the service and will wait and see what they have in mind and compare to other services available. It is so easy to change these days. They should announce the new price structure asap and not wait until the day they intend the new charges to apply.
