Introducing Peter Parkes
By
Peter Parkes on February 7, 2007 in Odds and ends.

Hello!
I'm the new Skype blogger for the UK, charged with collecting and communicating news, thoughts and opinions about Skype to the British audience, as well as gathering your feedback on Skype's products and services.
Whether you're in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, this blog is for you — I'll keep you up to date on what's happening with Skype in the UK, whether it's news, special offers, or other stories of interest.
Before I get down and dirty, it'd be great to hear what sort of stuff you'd like to see on this blog. Are we getting it right at the moment? Is there something you'd like to see more of? Something you'd like to see less of? Information you'd like to have, but don't at the moment?
Three ways to get in touch:
* Get on the banana phone — and have a nice conversation about what's good and what's not
* Chat me up — a less noisy option, especially if you're at work
* Leave a comment on this blog post — so that everyone will see it and be able to join in the discussion
Don't forget that you can get little updates every time something new appears on this blog — just have a look over to the right hand side of the page.
p.s. You can find out more about me on my personal website: Peter Parkes.

Hi Peter
I just have one *tiny* comment. We're fed up with the word "Disruptive". Please could you translate with something a bit more English like "Innovative" or "Leading edge"?
Ta very muchly

Hello Peter
Trust you'll be bringing us all the hot action from Skype Towers. I suspect you might need to change the bananaphone though, or those lovely chappies from Innovent might be bringing their less nice lawyers round...
Best

Chris — I'll see what I can do; more on this one after the break.
Rish — Good point. Although I'm sure they don't have a monopoly on bananas. At least I hope they don't.

Welcome Peter - 2 things come immediately to mind
* Get a proper helpdesk sorted out - there is so much noise about people complaining about credits etc that it cannot be doing Skype any good. If Skype want to be a big player then they need to have the ability to react quickly and keep their customers happy. Using a forum and an email to support was okay when they were snall - but paying customers expect more !!
* Sign on once facility - I want to be able to sign on once to visit the forum, leave comments etc etc. I've had to sign on twice - please sort it as its a pain in the bum and cant be that difficult to solve.

Hello Pete,
Looking forward to future posts from Skype Towers. I wonder, is there potential for informal Skype conferences for interested UK posters?
I'm a London-based photographer, working for magazines, ad agencies (not often enough), book publishers and submitting images to on-line agencies. I do wish however I could use Skype with these communities more often but I guess they have IT departments who have their banana systems so well entrenched in company policy, it's difficult to break into (and I don't mean hack).
Cheers,
Richard

I'm a big fan of podcasts and I down a variety each day for listening on the way to work. The daily Guardian Unlimited podcast is interesting as they have a Skype name 'gu-studio' where you can leave comments about their podcasts. One day I left a witty comment about an article and a day or 2 later my message appeared on the Podcast. If only other organisations were as forward thinking as the Guardian!!

Well, Andrew, if you leave me an interesting voicemail - and with your permission, of course - it may just end up on this blog!

I have found Skype very erratic in sound and picture quality. 3 out of 10 calls skype to phone is unexceptable. It is not the phone, because I pick up the phone , call the same number and it is perfect. ==Until qulity is reliable, skype will remain experimental a best.

This guide has some useful tips - and this one might be useful if you're more technically minded.

I have a Vermont (USA) 802 area code Skype-in number. But Vermont numbers don't seem to be offered for purchase any more. Can you tell me why or when they will be offered again?
Thanks.

Hi everyone, what numbers are included in the connection only charges (2.9 pence?) UK calls? 0845? 0871? mobile/cell numbers? std landline numbers begining with 01, 02 etc? are there any exclusions that attract a higher tarrif? Thanks, Albereh

Is it technically possible to offer Skype on an aircraft? In the US it's common to use normal seat-back phones but they're not cheap. Any thoughts on that? You mention Eos and Silverjet who are breaking the mould with their service across the Atlantic and I wonder whether Skype could hook up with an airline and offer Skype in the sky? Or is that just pie in the sky?

could you let me know if there are any plans for a Portsmouth (02392) Skype In number?

Hi Peter. Do you work for Skype In the UK? I'm trying to find the address of Skype's UK head office without much success...

Our daughter is an American international student in the UK with an Orange answer phone and Skype on her computer. We like the service but it's awkward getting to our computers at the same time with the time difference. Now she wants to use her UK mobile to call us in the States economically on on our land lines or mobiles, and she wants her friends in the U.S. to be able to call her cheaply on her UK mobile. Is this achievable with Unlimited World?
Or, does everyone need to set up individual services lines. Please shed light. We are awash in confusion.

Hi.
I can not find any usefull e-mail on which I can leave my sudgestions
to improve Skype:
If you already can create groups of conntacts, why you can not set
status (on-line, invisible, busy,..) for each group (or conntact) separately ?!?
It will be good when this options will be introduced in command line
when Skype is started.
Best regards,
Nikola
