SkypeIn Area Codes

By My status Peter on March 6, 2007 in Skype features, Skype tips and tricks.

Over the last week or so I've had quite a few people contact me asking about SkypeIn area codes — it seems that more and more people are looking for area codes for places which aren't big cities.

In the UK, SkypeIn numbers are available with the following area codes:

* 020 — London
* 0121 — Birmingham
* 0131 — Edinburgh
* 0141 — Glasgow
* 0151 — Liverpool
* 0161 — Manchester
* 0191 — Newcastle/Gateshead/Durham
* 0113 — Leeds
* 01237 — Brighton and Hove
* 028 — Northern Ireland (numbers available are in the Belfast range 028 95XX XXXX)
* 029 — Cardiff (numbers in the range 029 21XX XXXX)

These cover a reasonable selection of the bigger towns and cities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but there are certainly a few gaps. Which places would you like to see added to this list?

Just in case you're not aware, you can buy a SkypeIn number for wherever you like in the UK — different rules may apply to overseas numbers, and I know that France in particular requires you to be a French resident before you can have a French phone number.

Within Britain, though, you're free to choose any number. If you're at university in Birmingham, but have friends in Manchester, for example, you could grab a Manchester SkypeIn number so that they can call you at local rates. If you work between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and it's important to your clients that they don't think you're favouring one city over the other, then just pick one of each; you can have up to 10 SkypeIn numbers attached to each Skype name.

Heyy, I was just wondering, say I live in Coventry, near Birmingham and my friend in Australia gets a UK skypein number starting with 0207 which I persume is the London area code, will I be charged on my cell phone for dialing that 0207 number?

I'm using Vodafone by the way, so is it the same as calling a local landline which is included in the free minutes?

Good to see the number of area codes is increasing. I'd like to see 01293 added to the list. I can get one with other VOIP providers, but would rather stay with Skype.

I'd particularly like to see 01883 - Oxted. It would make sense to offer a full range like Gizmo Project, Vonage, Sipgate etc. You could do a deal with Magrathea - http://www.magrathea-telecom.co.uk/ - who seem to have the UK covered.Looking at their number ranges these are the people Gizmo & Sipgate use.

jonathanjensen | Tuesday, Mar 6

Bristol please!! (0117)

adambraunton | Tuesday, Mar 6

mishy825 you will be charged whatever you would normally be charged for calling an 020 number. It's just like calling a normal 020 landline in London.

Anyway it's great to see more area codes being made available although as others have said Skype ought to be able to offer the same areas as other providers do.

One thing people remember is that there is really no such thing as local and national rates as far as landline to landline calls go. If you place a call on BT from Edinburgh to London then it costs the same as calling another landline in Edinburgh.

I'd like to see Worcester (01905) and/or Malvern (01684) numbers made available and eventually just about any area code you can think of. More countries such as Italy would also be a step forward. How is it other VoIP providers can offer numbers in more countries?

01243 (Chichester) and 01534 (Jersey), please!

wotnospoon | Wednesday, Mar 7

Just uninstalled Skype after waiting 27 hours for credit to appear - like all else it is useless lies and crap - FED-UP WITH THIS GOD-FORSAKEN PLANET

terryjones34 | Wednesday, Mar 7

Oh cheer up terryjones34, I never have a problem with Skype. Credit has always appeared in seconds and to be honest your experience is not typical.

akelsall | Wednesday, Mar 7

It's be okay if I didn't get a Number Error every time I dialled my SkypeIn. Now waiting over a week since reporting it...

mjohnstn | Friday, Mar 9

Cambridge (01223) would be great!

camindustrialdesign | Thursday, Mar 15

Sheffield (0114) would be brilliant!!

atamorris | Saturday, Mar 17

I'd love you forever if you added Hull (01482). :)

faraday25 | Sunday, Mar 18

It would be great if you could add (01430), i believe it comes under South Cave but actually covers a large area including Market Weighton, Howden and Cave in East Yorkshire. Thnanks.

danieljhunt | Sunday, Mar 18

You have a big gap in the East Midlands -Leicester, Nottingham. From November this year these cities will be connected with Brussels and Paris by high speed trains (HST) to St Pancras and the new Eurostar terminal. Already big companies like John Lewis are regenerating at prime sites in the city centre. Virgin Media is targetting every house. Will Skype stand by and wait?

elephant328 | Thursday, Mar 29

Bristol or Gloucester would be good but even better for me would be 01594 (forest of dean).

BRISTOL

I know it has been said before but yes BRISTOL PLEASE 0117

trying to start a business and skypein is so much cheaper than a bt Landline as I only need a landline phone for incoming calls and answer machine

cheers

rainbowroofing | Saturday, Apr 14

this maybe the wrong forum, but I am thinking about SkypeIN (espically when bristol code is here) and I know that volicemail comes free with it, however what I cannot find out is HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RETRIEVE the volice mails???

Is it just free like uploading and downloading files onto your own webspace or does it cost me per call? if they are from local numbers to the skpeIn number will I be charged at local rate? what if they call from a mobile phone? I cannot find anything about retriving voicemails. Please can somebody set me straight, many thanks,

Rob

rainbowroofing | Wednesday, Apr 18

Retrieving Skype voicemail is free, no matter where the message comes from. You can't say fairer than that :)

peterparkes | Friday, Apr 20

I would like to see the 0118 number as a SkypeIn option - it covers a wide area in Berkshire, specifically Reading which is a major town if you ask me ;)

jonny.vaughan | Tuesday, Apr 24

Another one for Bristol please. I notice there isnt anything in the south west! I also know it doesnt matter what number you have however I really would like a local one, it is far less confusing to tell people your number when it is local, otherwise they always ask questions!

lloyd.randall | Tuesday, Apr 24

Just to add to the above! sorry clicked post too early.
Caoudl you (skype) setup a tell me when teh following is on sale section that emails you when the code you want is out?

L

lloyd.randall | Tuesday, Apr 24

david.bradley | Thursday, May 3

PEMBROKESHIRE PLEASE 01834 CODE thanks Estelle

estelleburton1964 | Wednesday, May 9

The sooner Skype gets all area codes included the better, I would like Wellington 01823, Taunton, St Helens 01744, Bridgewater and many many more. Or give us a local rate number that is local, all over England.

andyangiesimpson | Saturday, Jul 28

Please, please, please add Sheffield (0114) - it is a core UK city (as is Bristol) - bristol and sheffield seem to be the only top england cities without a code here

ben.coates84 | Saturday, Aug 18

Have you thought about adding reading (0118) it is within local call distance to most of the south / south east and since changing from 01734 it has loads of spare numbers (and you'd have at least 1 extra subscriber

steveted | Saturday, Aug 18

Hi, I am now living in sweden and have the same issue, i would like halmstad to be added to the area codes available (035) thank you.

jasonwatkins | Friday, Sep 7

Sheffield (0114) please! It's the fourth largest city in England and yet is missing from the available area codes.

errorgorilla | Friday, Sep 14

Please include Sheffield (0114).

rustamff | Sunday, Sep 16

Please include Worcester 01905 thanks

nerddesign | Friday, Sep 21

Another vote for Bristol (0117) area code!

shopformat | Monday, Sep 24

Another vote for Cambridge -- as a university town with people from all over the world, I know a lot of us use Skype.

christina.littlefield | Friday, Sep 28

And another for Bristol 0117 please

ipocca | Tuesday, Oct 9

Bristol 0117 again please!

benescott | Tuesday, Nov 6

Any chance we can get Nottingham (0115) on the list soon please.

danz013 | Friday, Jan 4

01603 Norwich please....none of the current area codes are near Norfolk

rogers.patenaude | Tuesday, Jan 8

JERSEY PLEASE
01534 XXXXXX

We may be a small island but we're slowly catching up!

lifeinjersey | Tuesday, Jan 29

The Southampton/Portsmouth area would be excellent... 023 is the main code, so 02380 for Southampton and/or 02392 for Portsmouth.

If I had to choose, I'd go with 02380 Southampton, but if you could do something with just 023, then even better.

twoam.photography | Friday, Feb 1

Another vote for Southampton 023 80 or Portsmouth 023 92...huge chunk on the south coast that is not covered...PLEASE i've been waiting for nearly 3 years!!

clarealsop | Thursday, Mar 27

01539 - Kendal & South Lakes area please :-)

anthony.cooper | Wednesday, Apr 23

Another vote for Portsmouth 02392 its one of the most densely populated areas in Europe, its a major UK city, home of the royal navy, 20,000 students at the university of Portsmouth who have a large amount of international students

I would also like to see a Petersfield (East Hampshire) number as this covers a large area in hampshire and west sussex
