Skype? Old school!

By My status Peter Parkes on May 8, 2009 in Skype in the news.

When Rupert Friend was asked how he and Keira Knightley keep in touch when they’re on location in far flung places, his response was an emphatic:

“We use Skype – old school!”

A Skype video call is the key to their often long-distance relationship, according to articles in mypark and OK.

Still, ‘old school’ isn’t bad for a five-year-old piece of software, eh? ;)

New School. Last night I joined and used Skype for the very first time. Am I a technophobe? No, I have worked in the Telecommunications/IT industry for many years. I'm computer literate, programming literate and, in the course of my work I remotely program computer and telephony systems from my base in Cyprus. Why have I never used Skype before? No reason really, just never felt the need. I use facebook, msn etc from time to time and occasionally mess around with my kids through live messenger but telephone calls are cheap and so I never felt the need to use Skype as a communication medium until last night. A friend of mine is in Nigeria for a few months on business and calls to his mobile clock up units on my call logger like milliseconds on a stopwatch. So.... I tried Skype for the first time. It took about 30 seconds to download, a similar amount of time to install, a minute to create a FREE account and another minute or so to interrogate my Outlook contacts before returning 56 skype users in my personal address book. Brilliant! Now, how did Skype perform? The connection to my friend in Nigeria was almost instant, neither he nor I had used it before so it took us half an hour or so of trial and error to explore the various different functions and features. Video was good, sound was good, file transfer a little slow but efficient. We both found it really easy to use and then we connected to his son in England for a conference call. Couldn't believe it, crystal clear threeway conversation between Nigeria, Cyprus and England and all three of us entirely new to Skype. How much did all this cost us? Absolutely nothing! I don't do testimonials, nothing on this planet impresses me that much (apart from the internet maybe)but Skype was seriously impressive in every way. I can't believe that I've ignored such a brilliant programme for all these years. Well done Skype!
