Oprah goes silent again—but that's OK

Last week, Oprah Winfrey’s foray into the New Age with spiritual teacher and best-selling author Eckhart Tolle went off the rails.
It was too much of a good thing. More than 500,000 seekers showed up to sit at Oprah’s and Eckhart’s feet. The plan was for class members to share their views via Skype video calls on the “A New Earth” event.
But there was trouble. The show crashed. A disappointed Oprah conceded there were “technical difficulties."
Don’t worry. It wasn’t Skype.
Despite the glitches, nearly two million people, from Afghanistan to Zanzibar, eventually watched or downloaded the first show at oprah.com or itunes.com.
I can tell you from visiting a Borders book store in the Chicago suburbs Saturday night that Tolle’s tome has been flying off the shelves. As the philosopher Borat would put it: “Great success.”
Monday night, students came back for more. And this time the show ran without a hitch—at least here in Flossmoor, IL. An enthusiastic Oprah said, “We are Skyping each other.” From Oprah's lips to the uninitiated masses' ears and web cams.
Among others, Oprah received a Skype call from a “Duluth (MN) Girl,” who now lives in Beijing. There were Skype video calls from Vancouver, Canada, and Chicago, Oprah’s backyard, and mine as well.
There were 10 seconds of silence during the event. Not to worry. No tech problem this time. The visitors to “aha!-land” were, Oprah said, coming together in silence to “give our minds a break.”
That seems like a good idea.
The program will be running eight more weeks.
