Skype takes flat rate calling international

By My status Howard Wolinsky on April 21, 2008 in Events, General, In the news.

Maybe you, like me, have feasted on the unlimited calling via Skype to non-Skype landlines and cell phones of your friends and family.

My landline bill shrunk when I used Skype Pro for unlimited calling.

Now for the first time this smorgasbord of calling is going international: Skype is introducing a new flat rate for unlimited calling to 34 countries.

My cousin Eddie on Skype in London already hears from me for free. But cousin Jill in London, who hasn’t managed to get with the Skype program, will be hearing from me a lot more often under the new plan.

And Skype has a special plan for Mexico. I’m going to have to tell mi amigo Guillermo that he can now get unlimited calling on Skype for a flat rate to his familia in Mexico. He will have milliones gracias for me.

Here are the rates Skype making available to customers in the United States and Canada:

•Unlimited U.S. & Canada: Unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in the U.S. and Canada. ($2.95 per month)

•Unlimited Mexico: Unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in the U.S. and Canada, and to landlines in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey; up to 80% off normal SkypeOut rates to landlines in the rest of Mexico and up to 40% off normal SkypeOut rates to all Mexico cell phones. ($5.95 per month)

•Unlimited World: Unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in 34 countries, including the U.S. and Canada, as well as to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey; up to 80% off normal SkypeOut rates to the rest of Mexico landlines and up to 40% off normal SkypeOut rates to all Mexico cell phones.($9.95 per month)

Each subscription also includes a Skype To Go number, which lets users make international calls at local rates from a cell phone or landline phone. A user dials an assigned access number and the call is connected by Skype to overseas numbers. Calls are charged at standard Skype calling rates.

From now until June 1st, Skype will offer a 33% off discount on 3-month and 12-month subscriptions. You can purchase subscriptions online.

Calls to other Skype users of course are still free.
