Tom's the mom: More Skype Oprah-style

Back in the 1980s, to put a fresh angle on new reproductive technologies, I wrote a front-page story that was headlined: “Will men bear children?”
The story caused quite a stir at the time. But the science was solid. It was only a matter of time before it happened.
It finally did. And on April 3rd—not April 1st—Oprah featured a story about a pregnant couple, Tom and Nancy, from Bend, Ore.
You guessed it: Tom is the mom.
Tom had once been a beauty queen, but felt she was more male than female and decided to have her breasts removed. Tom held onto to the rest of her reproductive organs. The rest is reproductive history as this bearded and pregnant man gets bigger by the day.
What’s this got to do with Skype?
Well, Oprah, who has adopted Skype on her “New Earth” webcast series brought on the air Tom and Nancy’s obstetrician and their neighbors to discuss the pregnancy via Skype video calls. Neighbor George, speaking on a Skype video call, described it as sexual dyslexia, but he was OK with it.
This was the fourth time since March 18 that Oprah has used Skype to help tell a story on TV. The Oprah-ization of Skype means this technology is ready for the masses.
Are the masses ready for men to bear children? Maybe so.
